Background of the Study

Training and development programs are integral to enhancing employees’ skills and competencies, which are essential for the competitiveness of organizations (Aderemi & Olufemi, 2023). Effective training not only helps employees improve their job performance but also contributes to their career development, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment (Obasanjo & Musa, 2024). Flour Mills of Nigeria (FMN), a key player in the Nigerian food manufacturing industry, has invested in training programs to ensure that its employees possess the necessary skills to meet the demands of a dynamic market.

However, despite the investment in training, there is a lack of systematic evaluation regarding the effectiveness of these programs in enhancing employee skills. FMN’s operational success relies heavily on the skill sets of its workforce, particularly in an industry where technology and best practices evolve rapidly. It is crucial to assess whether the training programs implemented by FMN truly lead to measurable improvements in employee performance and organizational productivity (Olawale & Ayodele, 2023).

This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of training programs in developing employee skills at Flour Mills of Nigeria in Bauchi State and provide recommendations for optimizing these programs to enhance overall performance.

Statement of the Problem

While Flour Mills of Nigeria has established training programs to enhance employee skills, the effectiveness of these programs has not been adequately evaluated. This creates a challenge in understanding whether the training programs are successfully addressing the skill gaps within the company. A thorough evaluation of the training effectiveness is needed to ensure that these programs are aligned with both employee development and organizational goals.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of training programs in developing employee skills at Flour Mills of Nigeria in Bauchi State.

  2. To evaluate the impact of training on employee performance and productivity at FMN.

  3. To recommend improvements to the training programs to better address employee skill development at FMN.

Research Questions

  1. What training programs are currently implemented at Flour Mills of Nigeria in Bauchi State?

  2. How effective are these training programs in enhancing employee skills at Flour Mills of Nigeria?

  3. What impact do the training programs have on employee performance and productivity at Flour Mills of Nigeria?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Training programs significantly improve employee skills at Flour Mills of Nigeria.

  2. Employee performance and productivity at FMN are positively influenced by the effectiveness of training programs.

  3. There is a significant relationship between employee skill development and organizational performance at Flour Mills of Nigeria.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the training programs implemented by Flour Mills of Nigeria in Bauchi State. Limitations include the potential bias in employee self-reported data and the challenges of accessing detailed performance data to evaluate the impact of training programs.
